   Barn Fire 5245 Hayes Rd.

On 06/15/06 at approximately 1500 hours Madison Township Fire Department, along with units from Columbus and Bloom Township, responded to a report of a structure fire at 5245 Hayes Rd. E182 was the first apparatus to arrive at the scene and found an approx 30'X 40' barn fully involved with fire. E182 pulled down the drive but due to low electrical wires had to stop about 75' short of the building. We decided to hit the fire with the deck gun to attempt a quick knock down and did so with moderate success. E181 was right behind E182 and started relaying water due to the fact that there are no hydrants in the area. A water shuttle was then started using engine companies from Columbus and Bloom Township. It was immediately ascertained that there were no life hazards in the barn so a defensive mode was taken. E182 stretched a 3" line and gated it to 2-1 3/4" handlines that were used to keep the fire undercontrol.

The barn had been loaded several days earlier with 750 bales of hay and 25 bales of straw. Due to the rapid fire spread prior to arrival and with talking with the owners it was decided to let the fire burn itself out since there was nothing to salvage inside the barn. A perimeter was cleared around the barn with a tractor that the owner had and debris cleared as needed so that the owner could keep an eye on the fire as it burned down. The building and contents were a total loss and valued at around $30,000.
