Automatic Aid
_____________________________________________________________
In an effort to provide
the best service possible to the citizens of Franklin County the fire
departments have developed an Automatic Aid Agreement. Under this agreement the
fire departments have adopted a policy that when there is an emergency the
closest appropriate unit or units are dispatched to the emergency to ensure the
lowest possible response times. This agreement also aids in the provision of
cost-effective fire and Emergency Medical Services to the community by
eliminating the unnecessary duplication of expensive equipment such as ladder
trucks and heavy rescue units. This agreement also makes more efficient use of
the existing available equipment by utilizing equipment based on location rather
than by department. The departments that Madison Township residents are most
likely to utilize in the event of an emergency besides Madison Township are the
City of Columbus, Bloom Township, Hamilton Township and Violet Township.
Emergency Medical Services
____________________________
The Madison Township Fire
Department provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at the paramedic level to
the community. There are 42 Paramedics, 2 Advanced EMT’s and 2 Basic EMT’s in
the fire department. This staffing ensures that all EMS units and fire engines
are staffed and equipped for paramedic level services 24 hours a day 7 days a
week.
When residents call for
EMS depending on the nature of the call either a medic or a medic and a fire
engine will respond to the call. The fire engine is sent on more serious medical
emergencies and will respond if they are closer to the location of the emergency
than the nearest available medic is.
Madison Township does not bill for
EMS Services at this time. Some of our automatic aid departments, principally
the City of Columbus, do. Regardless of whether a department bills or not EMS
Services will not be withheld from anyone needing them, even if the resident can
not pay for the service or does not have insurance. If a resident receives a
bill and can not afford to pay it they should not be concerned. All area
departments have adopted a policy known as “Soft Billing” . Under this policy
the department collects the portion of the bill covered by insurance and then
makes a reasonable effort to collect the balance from the individual. This
reasonable effort is usually accomplished in the following manner. Three bills
for the balance of the bill are sent out to the individual. If after this the
balance of the bill is not paid the balance is written off as uncollectable and
no more bills are sent. If you are a resident of Madison Township who has
received a bill for EMS Services and have questions please contact Madison
Township Fire Station 181. (614-837-7883)
